repti-lisious royal python

The royal python (latin name python regius) is an excellent snake for those with a bit more experience of looking after reptiles. Originating from Africa their sole diet is mice and rats (in the wild these are eaten live, in captivity they’re frozen then defrosted for feeding).

In captivity they need to be fed approximately once a week (though this does vary depending on mood and if the snake is shedding) and clean water ideally given every day.

While they can live longer, most captive royal pythons live for about 30 years. It’s important that this is taken into account when buying a royal python, as while they make excellent pets this is quite a long lifespan.

Female royal pythons can grow up to 6ft while the males are smaller at 4ft.
